I wanted to say something about this picture. Most of what I post comes from screen caps and found photos, but this I took myself. That’s my dad on the right hand side there. We were at a family cemetery scattering my grandfathers ashes that day. Took us a while to even find the place, it was so buried up there in the mountains.
I’m from a tiny old mill town that’s gritty, cramped, and full of noise. Barges bellowing, trains always passing and shit. There’s always some kind of hustle and commotion. Here though, it was still. Nothing but the crisp, startling mountain air providing a soundtrack. As soon as we stepped out of the car onto the hillside the scenery commanded attention. Vastness. It was like existing for miles and miles, past present and future, with our ancestors under our feet, fog in the skyline and powdered bone fragments slipping through our fingers into the snow. It was beautiful.
Anyway, that day meant a lot to us and I’m thrilled that, even without the history attached, this picture got some notes.
